Beloved by Sondheim devotees and based on a 1934 play by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart, Merrily We Roll Along premiered in 1981. It is not the best known work in the composer/lyricist’s extraordinary musical theater firmament. Yet even those not familiar with Sondheim’s music will recognize standout songs: the gorgeous ballad “Not a Day Goes By;” the rousing “Old Friends;” “Good Thing Going”--introduced to a wider audience by Frank Sinatra--and “Our Time.” In addition to Sinatra, these songs have been recorded by Petula Clark, Barry Manilow, Bernadette Peters, Audra McDonald, Mandy Patinkin, Barbara Cook, Lena Horne, and Liza Minnelli and are standards in the cabaret world.
The performance will be followed by a champagne and dessert reception in the Library & Music Hall Reception Hall and Studio spaces. Music and Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim ; Book by George Furth Presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). Production Staff
