ABOUT THE SHOW
In Baltimore, Maryland, in 1962, plump teenager Tracy Turnblad's dream is to dance on The Corny Collins Show, a local television dance program, alongside teen heartthrob Link Larkin. When she gets put in detention with Seaweed Stubbs and other African-American students in her high school, they teach her some of their dance moves, and her new-found groove wins her a spot on Corny’s show. Tracy becomes a celebrity overnight and uses her influence to advocate for racial integration on the TV show. She faces plenty of interference from the show’s narrow-minded producer, Velma Von Tussle, and her popular but vicious daughter, Amber. But Tracy has lots of allies on her side, including her parents Edna and Wilbur Turnblad, best friend Penny Pingleton, love interest Link, and show host Corny Collins, not to mention Seaweed, his little sister Inez, and his mother Motormouth Maybelle, the host of “Negro Day” on Corny’s show. Tracy Turnblad and her friends teach us all to look past the color of one’s skin and fight for every human being’s equal rights.
